Are you looking for a quick way to add flavour to your dishes with very little effort? Then, you've come to the right place. This vegan bouillon powder is ready in just a few minutes and requires simple pantry ingredients. It's perfect for enhancing soups, stews, and casseroles!
We made this stock powder using nutritional yeast as a base and then mixed it with dried herbs and spices, including parsley, oregano, thyme, garlic, onion, and nutmeg. Finally, we finished off with ground turmeric for extra colour and flavour.
All you have to do is pound the ingredients with a pestle and mortar or blitz them in a food processor until finely ground. This way, you'll have a fine bouillon powder that dissolves quickly in water without lumps. Simply store it in a jar and use 1 or 2 tablespoons of powder for every litre of soup.
Classic bouillon cubes consist of dehydrated vegetables, meat stock, and seasonings packed with salt and fat. Although quite convenient, stock cubes are not so good for you as they're very high in salt, contain unhealthy fats and harmful flavour enhancers. Moreover, the ones with meat are not suitable for folks on a plant-based diet.
With our recipe instead, you can prepare a much healthier bouillon powder. It's fat-free, salt-free, totally natural, and 100% vegan. Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast that you can find as yellow flakes at the supermarket or health food stores. It provides vitamin B12, proteins, and minerals.
As mentioned above, we didn't use any salt in our recipe. That's because we wanted to make a low sodium bouillon alternative that's good for you. Moreover, we feel that the amount of salt in a recipe is up to personal preference. So, feel free to use as much salt as you see fit!
- Nutritional Yeast
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Dried Thyme
- Dried Oregano
- Dried Parsley
- Ground Turmeric
- Ground Nutmeg (optional)
You can use either a food processor or a mortar and pestle to make the bouillon powder.
Add all the ingredients to the blender or mortar.
Next, pound them with the pestle or blitz them until they're finely ground.
Your homemade bouillon powder is ready.
Transfer it into a jar and keep it in a cool and dry cupboard; it will keep for months.
You can swap thyme and oregano with dry bay leaves.
Try adding two tablespoons of dried mushrooms for a deeper flavour.
